Dar Williams at The Hotel Café, 11-17-21: Photos

Dar Williams is currently on tour, supporting her excellent new album, I’ll Meet You Here. Last night she played a set at The Hotel Café in Los Angeles that focused on material from that album. She also joined opener Heather Maloney for a beautiful cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock.” By the way, Heather told the crowd she likes Dar Williams fans because they actually listen to the opener. At 7:45 p.m., Dar took the stage, backed by Bryn Roberts on piano, keyboards and backing vocals, and Ward Williams on electric guitar, cello and backing vocals. She opened with “Time, Be My Friend,” the song that also opens the album, with Bryn Roberts playing piano with his right hand and keyboard with his left. She followed it with “Berkeley,” also from the new album. The line “Still angry at Reagan” got an appreciate laugh from the audience. From I’ll Meet You Here, she also played “Magical Thinking,” “You Give It All Away,” “Let The Wind Blow,” “Little Town,” and “Today And Every Day.” Dar played “The One Who Knows” solo, and it was the only song of the evening to not feature the other musicians. The only cover in the set was “Cathedrals,” written by Jay Clifford and originally recorded by Jump, Little Children (a band Ward Williams is a member of). Heather Maloney joined Dar Williams on vocals for “As Cool As I Am” and “Iowa (Traveling III),” which closed out the set. The encore was “You’re Aging Well,” a song from The Honesty Room which Dar revisits on the new album. She signed her copy of the set list for a fan on the promise that he would plant a tree. The show ended at 9:12 p.m.
