The Evangenitals at Wingwalker Brewery, 11-7-21: Photos

You know it’s a special day when not only do you get to see The Evangenitals play an outdoor afternoon show, but you finally find a beer that your girlfriend likes. It all happened today at Wingwalker Brewery in Monrovia. The band took the stage a little after 4 p.m., and did two excellent sets of music, including some new material and some old favorites. They opened the first set with “Give Me Nothing,” which had me laughing aloud more than once, then followed it with the pretty “Sadie Hawkins.” Toward the end of the set, they played a cool new song titled “Near Miss,” which has a Bo Diddley beat and the line “I’m not a fucking psycho, I’ve just got some problems.” They ended the first set with “The Hole,” and it was so damn good to hear that one again.

The second set started as it was getting dark (thanks to the ridiculous tradition of changing the clocks back an hour), and had more of a funky vibe, including a song titled “I Want To Funk.” Indeed. They also did a cover of the Violent Femmes’ “Jesus Walking On The Water.” But the two songs that followed that were, for me, the set’s highlights – “Margaretha” and “Where A Man Belongs.” “Margaretha” is a powerful song featuring a strong vocal performance, and “Where A Man Belongs” is just bloody great. If you see these guys in concert, and you don’t see these two songs on the set list, be sure to request them. The encore today was my request, “Gasoline.” Juli Crockett started to sing the “clean” lyrics, but at reactions from both the crowd and fellow band members, she switched to the regular lyrics. The show ended at 6:29 p.m.

By the way, the beer that my girlfriend liked is called Flying Circus, and yes, I ordered it because I’m a Monty Python fan. And if you visit this brewery, when you go in to order your beer, you’ll see Rocky Horror Picture Show and Doctor Who items decorating the place. So you know you’re in good hands.
