The Evangenitals at Bordello 10-19-10 Set List

The Evangenitals did an amazing set at Bordello's in L.A. Tuesday night. The set featured some excellent new material and a version of "Purple Rain" that will completely blow you away. You have to see these guys perform this song to believe it. (Before tonight, i'd say the best version of that song that i ever saw was done by Martin Sexton at John Henry's in Eugene, Oregon like fifteen years ago. This version tonight by The Evangenitals surpassed that one.)

Stone Darling

Earlier tonight i caught a set by Stone Darling at The Echo, and i just have to tell you this is a band to keep track of. If you get a chance, go see them. They have a good sound, with wonderful vocals. There were moments in certain songs that reminded me of those great early 1960s bands. But they definitely have their own sound.

Holland Greco Set List

I caught the first set of Holland Greco's show today, and it was incredible. Just so much fun. She is doing a sort of residency at the Thirsty Crow in Los Angeles - playing there every Sunday this month. If you're in L.A., i highly recommend checking her out.

Dan Hicks Christmas Album

Anyone who knows me knows that i generally despise Christmas music. Certainly, there are some good Christmas songs - "Happy X-Mas (War Is Over)" by John Lennon, "Father Christmas" by The Kinks" and "Fairytale Of New York" by The Pogues - but the vast majority of Christmas songs are just fucking awful.

So what a wonderful surprise it is to listen to the new Dan Hicks And The Hot Licks Christmas CD, titled "Crazy For Christmas." I'm about 3/4 of the way through, and every song so far is fun, quirky, silly, wonderful. So here it is, the rarest of beasts: a good Christmas album.

I'll be writing a review of this CD soon and posting it on Suite101.

Jazz CDs - New Releases

I love it when new CDs arrive in the mail, even when i'm woken an hour before my alarm was to go off. Today five new jazz CDs arrived. Well, these are old albums, but new CDs.

All five have bonus tracks. Hurrah! Right now i'm listening to Miles Davis, and life is very good. These five CDs are being released by Concord Music Group. They were originally scheduled to be released September 28, 2010. I'm not sure what the actual release date is.
