The Evangenitals at Cinema Bar

The Evangenitals did an incredible set of music at Cinema Bar tonight. It was surprising, considering that their fiddle player, Andrea Baker, was unable to attend, and that their regular accordion player, Ari DeSano, was not there either. In addition, there was a new bass player (he's played with the band for the last few shows). So one might think that the set would be a bit uneven or messy. Not the case. It was a fantastic set, and featured two new songs.

Heather Quay & Jon Svetkey

While getting a few things done before the Bullied By Strings show tonight, i'm listening to a CD by Heather Quay & Jon Svetkey. And i just have to say that their version of "Run To Me" is incredible. Jon does some things vocally that i've never heard from him before. Totally blew me away.

Bullied By Strings Tonight

For those folks who are in Los Angeles and are looking for something to do tonight, Bullied By Strings is playing at East Side Luv. They're scheduled to go on at 9 p.m. (so will probably go on at 9:15 or so). If you haven't seen this band yet, tonight is the night, because they're moving to Chicago after this.

Bullied By Strings is an amazing band, and they put on a great show. The cover is only five dollars. How can you go wrong?

Nine Concerts

I got back last night from my trip. While in New England, i was able to get to nine concerts. Six of those were Ellis Paul concerts, and all six were excellent. The other three shows were Brian Doser, Cake and Glengarry Bhoys. I had a great time at each of those shows.

I will most likely be writing some sort of article about the Ellis Paul shows and another about Cake.

Also, i got some new CDs which i'll be listening to soon (and then reviewing). I wasn't able to pick up the newest Glengarry Bhoys CD, but i hope to get it soon. New albums are in the works from both the Glengarry Bhoys and Cake. So keep an eye out for more on that.

Ellis Paul Day (yes, it's official)

July 9, 2010 is officially Ellis Paul Day in Boston, Massachusetts. The mayor of Boston has declared it so. So there. To celebrate, Ellis Paul is doing a series of five concerts in two days at Passim in Cambridge. These are going to be special shows, as he's going to do eight of his albums in their entirety.

To kick off the weekend, Ellis Paul played a special show at the Foundation Room at the House Of Blues in Boston on Thursday, July 8. He played seven songs. Here is the set list:

2. Once Upon A Summertime
3. Heaven's Wherever You Are
4. Rose Tattoo
5. Maria's Beautiful Mess
6. Take All The Sky You Need
7. The World Ain't Slowin' Down

He played keyboard on the first three songs, and then guitar for the other four. The show was filmed for Comcast, so everyone will be able to see it later. Hurrah for that. Before his set he was handed the certificate with the declaration of Ellis Paul Day. (And yes, i took pictures of this.)

The 7 p.m. shows for both friday and saturday are sold out, but i hear there are still tickets for the 10 p.m. shows, and there are still tickets for the 3 p.m. family show on saturday. So if you're in Massachusetts (or anywhere near Massachusetts) you might want to get tickets for these shows. These will be ones to remember.

Ellis Paul at Passim in Cambridge, MA

Ellis Paul is doing a series of five concerts later this week at Passim in Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While that's not unusual in itself, what is interesting is that at four of the five shows he'll be performing two of his albums straight through. (The other show - a Saturday afternoon show - is just one album, the children's record.) So Ellis Paul has been relearning a lot of his old material, including some songs he hasn't played in approximately fifteen years. This will be a chance to hear a lot of great songs. And guess what? At only one of those five concerts will he play "3,000 Miles."

I'm hoping that after these shows, he'll continue to put a lot of these songs into his set lists.

Live Music In L.A., 6-5-10

Tonight, The Evangenitals will be doing a special concert at a place called Blue Star Cafe in Los Angeles. As a lot of you know, the members of this band are pretty busy folks, and they're all in other bands. So tonight there are actually eight bands playing. Each band has at least one member of The Evangenitals. So basically the show is eight hours of Evangenitals. It starts at 5:00 with Evangina, which is a stripped down acoustic version of the Evangenitals. Other bands include Poor Cow, Odious Ari & The Syphilitic Synopaths, EZ Tiger, Hallowed Engine, Honkeystomp and Unpopable. And the night ends with what is sure to be an incredible set by The Evangenitals. It's going to be insane. It's going to be one night of incredible music, with bands playing several different musical styles.
