International Women’s Day at The Hotel Café, 3-8-24: Photos

To honor International Women’s Day, a concert featuring female artists was held at The Hotel Café last night. The event took place in the Second Stage area of the venue, a wonderfully intimate space, and featured an excellent lineup of performers, each of whom performed three or four songs. Gena B. Jones opened the night just after 6:30 p.m. with a little standup comedy, and then introduced the first musical act, Lisa Sanders & Brown Sugar. For their third song, Lisa Sanders & Brown Sugar chose to cover “Wonderful World,” delivering a heartfelt and moving rendition, and getting the audience singing along. It was a beautiful moment, and it really helped set the perfect tone for the evening. The lineup also included, in order, Maureen Toth, Leeann Skoda, Taylor Kelly, Devon Michael, Hannah Avison, Kalie Shorr, Rainy Terrell, Averi Burk, and Lavalove. There were excellent performances throughout the night, but highlights for me were Maureen Toth, Leeann Skoda (I especially enjoyed her song “The Living Room”), Taylor Kelly (who was joined by Logan Roth on keyboard), Hannah Avison, Kalie Shorr, and Rainy Terrell (of Alibis). Kalie Shorr supported Hannah Avison on guitar and backing vocals, and then stayed on stage for her own set, and those two sets were particularly great. Hannah Avison’s “Where Would You Rather Die,” a funny song inspired by an actual conversation, was perhaps my favorite number of the show. And Kalie Shorr’s “Dirty Movies” was another standout from the night. There were several times when performers got the audience singing along, and there was a good energy in the room. The show was scheduled to go until 9:30 p.m., but actually went until 10:30.
