Chris Murphy, John Surge And The Haymakers, and The Ellie Rollins Band at Mayan Bar & Grill, 3-3-24: Photos

John Surge And The Haymakers, with Chris Murphy
That great concert series at the Mayan Bar & Grill in Monrovia continued last night with sets by Chris Murphy, John Surge And The Haymakers, and The Ellie Rollins Band. The weather persists being weird in Los Angeles, and it was still too cold for the show to begin on the patio, so all three bands performed on the indoor stage. I was particularly excited to see Chris Murphy, as I’d had the opportunity to review his last couple of releases, and enjoyed them tremendously. He started the show with a solo set, taking the stage at 6:05 p.m., creating loops and getting an entire band out of his violin. He also got the audience singing along with his “Done With Diane.” One of the highlights for me was “The Wolves Of Laredo.” His excellent set ended at 6:51 p.m., and ten minutes later John Surge And The Haymakers took the stage. The band includes bass player Teresa Cowles, whom I’ve seen perform with Evie Sands and Ben Vaughn, among other artists. Before the set started I asked her how many bands she’s in. She shrugged her shoulders, even she doesn’t know. Well, this band delivered some fun country numbers, focusing on material from Almost Time, which was released last year. Chris Murphy joined the band on fiddle on that album’s “What Were We Thinking,” which featured not only some great stuff on fiddle, but also some wonderful work on pedal steel. “Well, that was fun,” John Surge said after that song. “Anyone else want to play with us?” They wrapped up their set with a good rendition of “Six Days On The Road.” The Ellie Rollins band closed out the night, and it turned out that Chris Murphy is a member of that band, playing mandolin rather than violin. The band, which also included Marty Rifkin on dobro, got the chance to jam on several of the songs, including on the beautiful “Learning To Live Alone.” The show ended at 9:10 p.m. Oddly, it was warmer outside at the end of the concert than before it started. What’s going on, Los Angeles?
