October 2010 Concert Schedule

Here are some concerts coming up in October that you should be aware of. Check back, as I will add shows to this list as they're announced.

Entrain - Tupelo Music Hall, Londonderry, NH
Fountains Of Wayne - Troubadour, 9081 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA (with Jill Sobule)

Jefferson Airplane: "Live At The Fillmore Auditorium 10/16/66"

I just posted a review of one of the new Jefferson Airplane CDs. I had planned to review them in chronological order, and i did start by listening to Signe Anderson's last show (which is great, of course). But today i got really caught up in Grace Slick's first show with the band (which was the very next night). And so i ended up finishing that review first.

Here is the link: http://www.suite101.com/content/jefferson-airplane-live-at-the-fillmore-auditorium-101666-a286736

All four live Jefferson Airplane CDs are scheduled to be released on October 26, 2010. There are hints of more live recordings from this band being unearthed. So let's just hope that these first four sell well enough that Collectors' Choice Music decides to release another batch.

Leonard Cohen and Jefferson Airplane

The new Leonard Cohen CD/DVD 2-disc set Songs From The Road is (as expected) phenomenal. The performances are all perfect. Twelve songs from eleven different shows from 2008 and 2009. (There are shots of the audiences for all the shows except of course for the one i was at in San Jose - i was in the sixth row, and i was really hoping i'd be visible - oh well.) And the special feature on the DVD - Backstage Sketch - is a total treat. It has great snippets of all the band members and footage of Leonard Cohen warming up in an empty concert hall, as well as a bit of "Feels So Good," one of his new songs. I highly recommend this CD/DVD. It was released on September 15th.

I also got the four new Jefferson Airplane CDs. And let me just say: WOW. I had very high expectations for these, and they've exceeded them. I'll be writing reviews of all four CDs (actually, two of them have two discs) and posting those reviews on Suite101 soon. They're due to be released in late October.

Bird On A Wire DVD

I was planning on writing a review of the new Leonard Cohen DVD, Bird On A Wire. But i feel completely incapable of describing this amazing film. It has lots of incredible footage from his 1972 tour through Europe, including an early version of "Chelsea Hotel." There is lots of backstage footage as well as concert footage. And it's just beautiful. It's moving. It's wonderful. If you're a Leonard Cohen fan, you probably already bought it, as it's been out for a week or so. For those who aren't familiar with his music, this film will most likely make you fall in love. With the music, with the man.

I gave this a 10 on IMDB. It's amazing. Truly. That's about all i can say.

Holland Greco Concert Tomorrow

Holland Greco is performing at the Thirsty Crow in Silver Lake tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m. Three hours? Her usual set is under an hour, so this should be pretty amazing. In the announcement, she says she's going to do covers and original material.

And then tomorrow night at 9 p.m. Leslie Knauer's new band Loverbombz is doing a show at the Cat Club. I haven't heard this band yet, but i'm a big fan of her previous band, Kanary. (And some folks will remember the band Precious Metal from the 1980s - an all-girl rock group that Leslie sang lead vocals for.)
